I’m addicted to making things

It’s true. I enjoy making things. Music, drawings, paintings, woodworking, cooking, storytelling… if it’s creative, I probably enjoy it. That said, the only thing companies are willing to pay me to make is software. And lately, I haven’t been feeling that whole corporate vibe. So, here I am, working on a visual novel app, kind of doing my own thing.

I’m making a game. Great! I’m creating music for it. Great! Now, for the next challenge: the art. I want to create all of the character designs, poses, special “secret” ending artwork, and environments. …uhh, that’s a lot.

i have unlimited time and energy, right?

I’ve been known to place a lot of responsibility on myself. I’ve joked about it before, but it’s a real thing. As a result, I’ve picked up a wide range of skills. I’m not the best chef, guitarist, or artist, but I get by pretty well in all of them. It’s a classic “jack of all trades, master of none” situation. But the problem with that is, I’ve also always preferred doing things on my own because group projects haven’t always worked out. They can be tricky, and sometimes, I find it easier to just take control and get things done myself.

But as this project grows in scope and gets closer to reality, I’ve realized I can’t do it all alone. And not only that, the project will be better if I DON’T do it alone.

let’s collaborate

I could tackle the art myself and make something “good enough”, but that’s not the level I’m aiming for. Quality artwork is integral to the success of this app, and needs a master, not “good enough”. It needs somebody who loves drawing, has fantastic style, and the time to dedicate to make it look fabulous. I need help.

Do you love drawing in anime and manga styles? Do you love playing visual novels or reading fanfiction? Are you someone who can take rough concepts and help refine them through multiple iterations until we have something that shines? Can you making character feel like real people across different poses and scenes? And most importantly, do you enjoy creating something that you can own and be proud of?

but what’s the vibe?

In terms of what I want the look and feel to be: Do you know Asian Kung Fu Generation? They’re fantastic, you should know them. If you don’t, go check them out now. And most of their cover art is done by Yusuke Nakamura, a fantastic artist. I love his style, the bold colors, the generous use of negative space and absence of color, the fantastic line work. I would love to be able to evoke that general feel in this application.
